Derek C. Merritt passed away August 30, 2026 at the University of Kentucky hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, surrounded by loving family members.

Born July 9, 1971 in New York to Charles, Jr. & Mary Wilson Merritt now of Georgia, he resided in Lexington and was currently employed with Wheels/RATP, a private public transportation company contracted by the city of Lexington.  A company and job position which he loved. Derek was an advocate lover of animals especially dogs. His last dog companion, up until his death, he affectionately called Sophie. His personal hobby was writing poetry. Something he embraced from early childhood. He loved creative expressions.

He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother.

Left to cherish his precious memory in addition to his parents are four children; six grandchildren; a brother; and a sister-in-law, along with several aunts and uncles and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Though the family is embracing a private time of grieving, a Memorial Celebration will follow in the future.
